5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Sofa for Your Living Room

Looking for the perfect sofa? You're in the right place! Toth Móveis offers essential tips to help you choose the ideal sofa for your living room.

1. Sofa Environment

When choosing the ideal sofa, the first step is to determine the place where it will be used, that is, the type of room, living room, TV room, guest room, or office.

This is because the environment will directly influence the type of sofa and its purpose. A sofa for a TV room, for example, should be soft and deep, and can even be extended by a chaise longue for greater comfort.

On the other hand, the same sofa would not be ideal in a living room, which is more geared towards family or friends getting together to chat. Sofas that are too deep and soft can make it harder to sit down and get up.

In this case, as the priority is to receive guests, choose firmer seats, with a standard height (around 45cm), less depth (around 90cm) and with straighter backrests.

And in the case of an office or guest room, perhaps the sofa could have the same features as above, but be retractable or a sofa bed type.

Finally, if the space is multipurpose, with several functions – entertaining, watching TV and hosting – you have the option of combining all these characteristics: a firmer and less deep sofa, but with a chaise section that extends and can be used as a sofa bed.

Another tip is to maximize space by using poufs to add even more comfort and stretch your feet, as well as comfortable cushions.

2. Sofa Size

The size of the sofa will be determined by the space available in your room. The best thing to do is to measure the entire room and make a floor plan with all the furniture you want to combine. If it is to scale, better yet, otherwise, try to write down the measurements of everything.

Consider a minimum of 60 cm of free space on each side of the sofa, in addition to the space for circulation between other furniture, such as armchairs, coffee tables and side tables. Two-seater sofas, for example, usually measure around 160 cm and three-seater sofas around 200 cm.

Try to avoid sofas that are deeper than 100 cm in smaller spaces. Sofas with visible legs give the impression of lightness to spaces and work well in small spaces. Don't forget to measure the width of doors, elevators, stairs and other passageways to ensure that the sofa can be delivered without difficulty.

3. Sofa Model

Another important factor to consider is the model of the sofa in relation to its usefulness. Just like the environment, defining what you expect from the sofa is essential for it to be useful. As we saw above, each model will perform a specific function, depending on the environment in which it will be placed.

4. Ergonomic Comfort

Both the upholstery and the foam make all the difference, but the choice depends on your taste and style. In the case of foam, you will have to consider the weight of the person who will use the sofa frequently.

In general, seats between D28 and D33 are the most commonly used, as they offer greater firmness and comfort. The elastic straps, which help to support all this foam, provide an extra layer of softness and flexibility.

The upholstery is what gives the piece its appearance and aesthetic charm, also determining its style in relation to the room's decor. However, the upholstery fabric is also directly linked to its use.

Suede, for example, is one of the most commonly used fabrics, as it is soft to the touch and does not scratch. Other fabrics such as cotton linen, polyester linen, leatherette and leather have different feel to the touch, but suit most tastes.

However, they may not be the best option for those with children or pets at home. In this case, the ideal is to opt for more durable fabrics (such as canvas or denim) in dark colors, natural leather, outdoor fabrics such as “acquablock” or removable and washable covers.

5. Materials and Coatings

Linen

It can be natural or mixed, with synthetic fibers for greater durability. Synthetic linen has the advantage of being waterproof and wrinkle-free, but natural linen has a soft touch and a “crumpled” texture that gives it a cozy and rustic appearance.

Suede

Very popular and durable, but with a softer feel than chenille. But avoid the “wet” and shiny style.

Designer Tip: Ask for samples of the sofa fabric before purchasing, many online stores send a small sample by post, paying the shipping cost.

Leather
